Here at Gardening Know How, we try to provide gardeners with as much information about plants as we can, so that you can decide if a plant is right for you or not. In this article, we will answer the question: “what is a Ghost Cherry tomato” and include tips on how to grow a Ghost Cherry tomato in your garden.
Ghost Cherry Information
Cherry tomatoes are excellent for salads or snacking. I grow Sweet 100 and Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes every year. I first started growing the Sun Sugar tomatoes on a whim. I saw the plants for sale at a local garden center and thought it would be fun to try a yellow cherry tomato. As it turned out, I loved the sweet, juicy flavor of them so much, I’ve grown them every year since. Many gardeners probably have similar stories of discovering a favorite plant this way. I’ve found that mixing yellow and red cherry tomatoes in dishes or vegetable trays also creates an appealing display. Other unique varieties of cherry tomatoes, such as Ghost Cherry tomatoes, can also be used to create delicious and appealing dishes. Ghost Cherry tomato plants produce fruits that are slightly larger than the average cherry tomato. Their 2- to 3-ounce (60 to 85 g.) fruits are a creamy white to light yellow color, and have a light fuzzy texture to their skin. As the fruit ripens, it develops a light pink hue. Because they are a little bigger than other cherry tomatoes, they can be sliced to reveal their juicy insides, or used whole like other cherry tomatoes if you prefer. The flavor of Ghost Cherry tomatoes is described as very sweet.
Growing Ghost Cherry Plants
Ghost Cherry tomato plants produce an abundance of fruit on clusters in mid to late summer on 4- to 6-foot-tall (1.2 to 1.8 m.) vines. They are indeterminate and open pollinated. Ghost Cherry tomato care is just like caring for any tomato plant. They require full sun, and regular waterings. All tomatoes are heavy feeders, but they do better with a fertilizer higher in phosphorus than nitrogen. Use a 5-10-10 vegetable fertilizer 2-3 times throughout the growing season. Also known as transparent cherry tomatoes, Ghost Cherry tomatoes will mature from seed in about 75 days. Seeds should be started indoors 6-8 weeks before your region’s last expected frost date. When seedlings are 6 inches (15 cm.) tall and all danger of frost has passed, they can be planted outdoors in the garden. Plant these seedlings at least 24 inches (60 cm.) apart and plant them deep so that the first set of leaves are just above the soil level. Planting tomatoes deep like this helps them develop large vigorous root systems.
